What Does a Typical Day in ABA Therapy Look Like?

If you’re considering ABA therapy for your child with autism, you may be wondering what a typical day actually looks like. Understanding the structure and routine of a therapy session can help you feel more prepared and confident in your decision.

At Breakthrough ABA, we offer both in-clinic and in-home ABA therapy across the Greater Houston area, and each child’s day is personalized to meet their developmental goals, needs, and learning style.

🕘 A Day in the Life of ABA Therapy

Every child’s ABA schedule is customized, but here’s a general idea of how a full-day program might be structured:

1. Arrival & Warm-Up (8:30 – 9:00 AM)

Children are greeted by their Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) and supported through a smooth transition. A brief warm-up activity like a favorite toy or interactive game helps ease into the day.

2. Skill-Building Sessions (9:00 – 11:00 AM)

This is a core part of the therapy day. Using evidence-based ABA techniques like discrete trial training (DTT) and natural environment teaching (NET), therapists work on:

  • Communication skills
  • Functional routines (e.g., washing hands, toileting)
  • Social interactions
  • Emotional regulation
  • Following directions

Each goal is broken into small steps, reinforced with praise, tokens, or favorite activities.

3. Snack Break & Free Play (11:00 – 11:30 AM)

Therapists incorporate independence skills like asking for help, cleaning up, or waiting their turn. These social moments are still teaching opportunities.

4. Group Learning or Social Skills (11:30 AM – 12:30 PM)

Children may participate in peer play, group instruction, or structured turn-taking games. These help generalize skills learned in 1:1 sessions to more natural settings—essential for school readiness

5. Lunch & Break Time (12:30 – 1:00 PM)

ABA therapy also targets daily living skills, such as opening containers, sitting at the table, and requesting items appropriately.

6. Afternoon Therapy (1:00 – 3:00 PM)

Depending on the child’s energy and learning pace, afternoon sessions may focus on:

  • Behavior reduction (e.g., tantrums, aggression)
  • Academic readiness (e.g., colors, shapes, counting)
  • Generalization activities (e.g., practicing a new skill in a different setting)

7. Parent Debrief or Notes (3:00 – 3:30 PM)

Therapists provide a daily summary of what was achieved, what challenges arose, and how progress was measured using ABA data collection tools.

👥 A Team Behind the Day

Behind each child’s typical ABA day is a coordinated team:

  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA): Oversees goals, creates treatment plans, and monitors progress.
  • RBT (Registered Behavior Technician): Provides direct therapy.
  • Parents/Caregivers: Receive training and support to carry over skills into the home.

In many of our Houston locations, we also collaborate with speech therapists, occupational therapists, and schools to ensure a holistic plan.

🌆 Houston Parents: What to Expect

In Houston, full-time ABA therapy typically ranges from 20 to 40 hours per week, depending on the child’s age, goals, and insurance coverage. We offer flexible schedules,  and resources for parents to stay involved.

Whether your child attends ABA therapy in Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, or Spring, they’ll benefit from a structured, engaging environment designed to help them thrive.
